Peni Candra Rini and Andy McGraw Performance: New Music from Java
Dr. Peni Candra Rini is faculty at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts in Surakarta, an Aga Khan Music Laureate and a recipient of grants from Fulbright, AAC, and the US State Department. She has been described as “one of the world’s greatest singers” by the Kronos String Quartet, with whom she often works. Her music is contemporary and bold, but deeply informed by Javanese tradition.
Dr. Andy McGraw is Associate Professor and Chair of Music at the University of Richmond, Virginia. The duet will present a live performance of new music composed by Rini and arranged by McGraw during his Fulbright residency at the the Indonesian Institute of the Arts this spring. The performance will be a sneak peak of their upcoming appearance at the Edinburgh International Festival and will include innovative shadow theater.
